Reflections On Our Life in Jesus Christ

Oxford’s 2016 word of the year is “post-truth” and reflects progressive cultural shifts away from truth. It’s defined as an adjective “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” Timothy Keller gives some insight on how we’ve moved to such relative thinking. In the 1992 Supreme Court ruling on Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in which Roe v. Wade was upheld, the following statement was made in the majority opinion: “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning of the universe, and the mystery of human life.” Keller points out, “the statement does not say we are just free to ‘discover’ truth for ourselves but rather to ‘define’ and create it.”[1] [2]

Our culture has moved from believing that truth (which is unchanging) is discovered, to the belief that we can now create “truth” (which will always be changing). If this was applied to an Easter egg hunt, it would mean we no longer think eggs are found, but they exist wherever we want them to!
