The May 2016 issue of National Geographic magazine was devoted to Yellowstone National Park. This historic place, which was the first National Park in the United States, covers nearly 3,500 square miles and has a road system stretching out some 300 miles. Over 4 million people arrive each year to take in the many sights offered at Yellowstone but even if they travel all 300 miles of roadways, they will cover just 1% of the park. Visitors often leave thinking they’ve seen Yellowstone, yet the most ardent tourist will have not experienced 99% of Yellowstone.
In similar fashion we tend to overestimate our understanding of God when in fact we have seen but a fractional glimpse of all He is.
“But as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’ – these things God has revealed to us through his Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
